NAME: Jay Ellis
DJ NAME WHERE DID IT COME FROM?: when In New York a policeman tried issuing me a ticket because I didn’t cross the street where indicated. He
tried charging me with ‘Jay Walking’ so I thought Jay Walker was fitting.
WHAT STYLE OF MUSIC YOU PLAY?: The full spectrum of dnb dirty/party dubstep
CDJ'S OR VINYL WHAT SET UP DO YOU USE?: Both – Mainly CDJs for dubstep, but still like my vinyl for dnb, but cds are part of my set
HOW BIG IS YOUR COLLECTION?: 1000’s and 1000’s of vinyl I reckon, more on cd!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DJING?: 15 years
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN MUSICALLY INFLUENCED?: I played cello at school for while til I realised how un-cool it was! My dad is really into music, so have
been surrounded by good music all my life.
WHY DID YOU START DJING / INSPIRATION, WHAT GAVE YOU THE INITIAL PUSH?: I saw a local dj play in the youth club near me when I was at school, I knew I
wanted to dj after that.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DJ'S?: Andy C, Dirtyphonics, DJ Rectangle, Rusko, Skream, Caspa and Scratch Perverts.
TOP 3 FAVOURITE TUNES OFF ALL TIME: Papua New Guinea – FSOL [High Contrast RMX] / Valley Of the Shadows – Origin Unknown / On a Ragga Tip –
WHAT WAS THE FIRST TUNE YOU EVER BROUGHT: Ganja 001 ‘You must think first’ - DJ Hype and a white label that just said ‘Hardcore’ on it, no
idea what it was!
OUT OF ALL OF YOUR TUNES, WHICH ONE "NEVER FAILS"? : Alien Girl – Ed Rush Optical [Jay Walker VIP]
DO YOU PRE PLAN YOUR SETS OR PLAY FOR THE CROWD?: Occasionally tunes go together so well it would be foolish not to play them In a set again and
again, but I mainly play for the crowd.
WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED?: Too many to list them all, lots of local nights in the Hampshire/Surrey area, the highlights for me were Breakneck –
Portsmouth Pier, Subsidance - Rhythm Factory, London, and the phattest houseparty in NYC when I was 16!
IF YOU COULD PLAY ANYWHERE WHERE WOULD IT BE?: Main Room @ Matter, London, standard!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO UP AND COMING DJS?: Nothing, I cant get enough sets myself, everyone should retire and give me a chance! Lol. Nah,
Seriously tho, keep at it and practice makes perfect. Also never turn down a set no matter how bad the sound system is, it will make you a lot more
adaptable later on in your dj career.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE MUSIC SCENE IN 5 YEARS AND WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN IT?: The scene can only get stronger imo, new producers come through on a
monthly basis, pushing boundries and redefining where the line falls which is great for the music. As for me, I know I’ll still be plugging away,
doing my thing.
ANYTHING ELSE? ANY SHOUTS? ... Shouts to All the old Reapa Records crew, Bad Ace Inc, MC3D, Ratta and all the Passive/Aggressive extended family.
IF YOU HAD A TIME MACHINE WHAT YEAR WOULD YOU GO TO AND WHY?: I go back to early 90’s and invent drum bass, catapulting me to stardom and
cementing myself as the godfather on dnb!
IF YOU COULD DO OR BE ANYTHING ELSE WHAT WOULD IT BE?: Either a Derren-Brown-style-mind-monger or a high-class Gigalo!
WHEN YOU WERE 12 WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?: Graphic Designer
IF I CAME TO YOUR HOUSE AND WENT IN YOUR FRIDGE WHAT WOULD I FIND?: Fridge is bare as ive just moved into a new place, but milk for the Tea is
6 ITEMS YOU COULDNT LIVE WITHOUT: A PC, Decks, My Allen Heath, TV, Xbox360 and something to smoke!
AND FINALLY....... WHY SHOULD WE LISTEN TO YOU PLAY?: Simply because youre guaranteed to hear tunes you’ve never heard before!
